The incumbent serves as the Regional Fuels Specialist and provides specialized and professional guidance for agencies within the region in the development, management, and implementation of fuels treatment programs and the use of prescribed fire and wildland fire to achieve resource benefits. Participates with regional fire management officers in interpreting and implementing national fire program policies. Acts as liaison between the Regional Director, Agency Superintendents, regional and national multi-agency coordinating groups for deciding appropriate management strategies for wildland and prescribed fires during Preparedness levels IV and V. Develops and evaluates methods for the documentation, analysis, and prediction of prescribed fire and wildland behavior and effects.
