The Pacific Southwest Region Fire and Aviation Management Staff is recruiting for two permanent, full-time GS-462-9 Air Tactical Mission Coordinator positions; one position will be located in Lancaster, CA, and the other in Redding, CA. These are exciting opportunities and will provide the successful applicants with a challenging and rewarding experience working one of the largest fire management programs in the nation. Position Information
The primary purpose of this position is as the Air Tactical Mission Coordinator in the Region 5 North or South Zone Air Units. The position also provides aerial program management, acts as liaison to external and internal cooperators, and provides various training classes/modules.
The ASM1 is a fixed wing platform that utilizes two crewmembers to perform the functions of traditional air attack; and when necessary, performs low-level operations, including lead profiles. ASM1 aircraft and crews are National resources. The ASM1 requires both crewmembers to be trained and work as a team, utilizing cockpit resource management (CRM) skills and techniques to enhance safety efficiency and effectiveness. Module operations require a fluid relationship between crewmembers that incorporates task sharing and coordination.
Serves as a Mission Coordinator of agency and interagency aerial operations over incidents; this includes directing and coordinating tactical, logistical and other fixed and/or rotor winged aircraft such as air tankers, lead planes, large helicopters, smokejumper aircraft, helitack aircraft, law enforcement, media and civil aircraft with ground based personnel and management. Position provides for overall efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of aerial and ground personnel or resources while airborne over an incident.
FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This is a secondary firefighter position under 5 USC 8336(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). Prior wildland firefighting experience is required. Qualifications as an Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) are required.
Location Information – Lancaster, CA
Lancaster is in the Antelope Valley, located about 60 minutes north of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and 90 minutes fro World Famous Disneyland in Orange County and only 45 minutes from Mountain High Ski Resort.
The climate is sunny, dry, and temperate with average high temperatures of 57 degrees in December and 90 degrees in June. The average elevation of the area is around 2500 feet, with mountains over 7000 feet nearby. On rare occasions, it even snows on the valley floor, although it usually melts in a few hours. However, snow is often visible on nearby mountains several months out of the year.
Local industry includes aerospace, with the famous Skunkworks facility and Edwards Air Force Base. Skunkworks is reputed to create a great deal of experimental aircraft. It is not uncommon to see Stealth Fighters flying over the Valley. Edwards Air Force Base has been the site if incredible experimental flight testing for many years.

Redding, a full service community with a population over 100,000, is located in Shasta County at the extreme north end of the Sacramento Valley. Redding is equal distance between Los Angeles and Seattle on Interstate 5. It is 160 miles north of Sacramento; 155 miles south of Medford, OR; 225 miles north of San Francisco; and 200 miles northwest of Reno, NV. There are three incorporated cities in Shasta County: Redding (the county seat), Anderson, and the City of Shasta Lake.
