The Pacific Southwest Region’s Regional Aviation Group is recruiting for a permanent, full-time GS-2101-11/12 Helicopter Operations Specialist to be located in McClellan, CA. This is an exciting opportunity and will provide the applicant with a challenging and rewarding experience on one of the largest fire management programs in the nation. Position Information
This position is the Regional Helicopter Operations Specialist, in State and Private Forestry, Regional Aviation and Fire Management Staff.
The incumbent serves as an expert in helicopter operations, responsible for regional direction and oversight of all helicopter operations, including direct and indirect fire suppression, aerial ignition, rappelling, transportation of personnel and cargo including hazardous materials into remote areas, helicopter crew training, facilities adequacy, and equipment suitability. The primary purpose for having helicopters is fire suppression and the majority of the work of the position is in support of wildland fire suppression (80%); however, the incumbent provides direction and oversight to helicopter operations supporting any Regional activity.
This is a secondary firefighter position under the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) and under 5 U.S.C. 8412(d), and experience in fire fighting (wildland) is required in this position.
Location Information
This position is located in McClellan Park, at the site of the former McClellan Air Force Base, northeast of Sacramento, CA. Sacramento is located 90 miles northeast of San Francisco, and 383 miles north of Los Angeles. The Greater Sacramento Area spans numerous counties with approximately 2.1 million people. The population is diverse, with several languages spoken. Cable television networks broadcast in Spanish and multi-cultural newspapers are also available. Ethnic specialty stores can be found in neighborhoods and an amazing variety of foods from around the globe are available at various farmers’ markets located throughout the area.
As California's capitol city, Sacramento is center stage for governmental policy for the entire state. A dynamic business sector; an expanding public transportation system (including Light Rail); affordable housing, and growing cultural, educational, and medical facilities serve the needs of 2.1 million people.
The confluence of two of the state's largest rivers is just a short walk from the steps of City Hall. San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and Yosemite Valley, all offering a wide variety of recreational and cultural activities, are just a few hours away. Transportation: The city is easily accessible from all directions. Interstate 80 and US Highway 50 run east/west; Interstate 5 and US Highway 99 run north/south. Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is served by virtually all major airlines with 150+ flights per day. There are non-stop and direct flights from 52 cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, and St. Louis.
Culture/Entertainment: Sacramento is home to professional ballet, opera, and theatre companies as well as to over 32 theaters, galleries, and museums. Nighttime entertainment ranges from quiet piano bars to folk and pop ensembles and from country western to rock and roll.
Recreation: In a city bound by two rivers, the American and the Sacramento, water recreation tops the list for outdoor activities. Salmon and steelhead fishing, river rafting, and boating--all can be done on the 1000 miles of waterways around Sacramento and the Delta. Nearby Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma offer sailing and windsurfing.
Sacramento municipal golf courses provide the surrounding community with 540 acres of quality fairways and greens. More than 120 city parks encompassing over 2,000 acres provide outstanding natural and developed parklands.
Professional sports are represented by the Sacramento Kings of the NBA, the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA and the Sacramento River Cats, a Triple-A baseball team.
